Mailbox Baseball-proof mailbox
Around midnight one foggy evening, I hear a loud bang outside. I go outside to hear laughing and a truck screech away. Next morning I see my mailbox gone - just the post left. Mailbox baseball. Great. And they took the mailbox!
So I calmly went inside and drew up plans for a more "robust" mailbox. I started with a store bought heavy gauge mailbox. I constructed a frame for it, using 14 gauge square tubing, 1/4" plate for the base, and 10 gauge side panels. I plasma-cut my house number in the side panels, painted the sides of the mailbox white so the numbers would look painted on. Then bolted the mailbox to the base plate.
The square tubing shaft slides neatly onto the existing wood post and mounted with screws. I painted the whole thing the same color so it looks innocent enough. The mailbox top is exposed, but since it is curved, a bat would have a hard time making solid contact. So far, there have not been any more attempts.
